LIOJ 35th Anniversary
Marc Brand
(1991-92)

I worked at LIOJ, mostly in the Junior High School Team Teaching Program, from January 1991 to August 1992. After LIOJ, I stayed in Japan for two more years teaching for Texas A&M University in Koriyama, Fukushima prefecture. For the past nine years, my family and I have been living in Madison, Wisconsin where I teach world history at the local high school.

My most memorable moments at LIOJ are:

1. The fantastic reception and appreciation shown by students and teachers when arriving at the junior high schools: being met with great smiles and energy.

2. The fantastic interaction with the participants during the LIOJ Summer Workshops, and the chance to be a student and a teacher.

3. The chance for my family (Ben, Hank, Jo, and myself) to be able to be a part of a culture that has left a permanent imprint on us and has helped us grow in many ways. Many of the friendships started twelve years ago are still an active part of our lives today.

4. How can one forget having a beer vending machine across the hall from the office at the end of a long day?

Have a great year!
