LIOJ 35th Anniversary
Elizabeth Partridge

On Being New to LIOJ, Odawara, Japan

The Shinkansen speeds
Towards snow-clad Mount Fuji,
Glorious in sun.

Automatic doors
And white-gloved taxi drivers;
Currency muddle!

The Asia Centre
Perched on a hill, usurping
Ancient castle grounds.

Odawara town,
Sea, hills and nearby mountains;
Heaven upon earth.

Then a warm welcome;
An intensive induction
To prepare for work.

Enthusiastic
Children and charming adults
Prove a joy to teach.

A room with a view
On a steep and narrow road
Near a bamboo wood.

Trying sashimi;
Artistic Japanese food
With delicate taste.

Earthquakes disturb sleep;
Typhoons breeze by, touching us
With gentle fingers.
